What is Kamakura-bori?

For nearly 800 years, Kamakura-bori has brought together hand-carved wood and layers of urushi lacquer.

Look closely and you can see the depth of the carving, subtle variations in the surface, and sometimes even the traces left by the artisan’s blade. Born in the temples and workshops of medieval Kamakura, the craft has continued to evolve into objects made not only to admire, but to live with.
