Kamakura-Bori Round Lacquer Serving Plate, Radiating Chisel Mark

Carved and lacquered in Kamakura

Sold out

Boxed by hand and shipped from our US warehouse within three business days.

Hand-carved in Kamakura by Sansuido, this round Kamakura-bori serving plate brings a warm, sculptural rhythm to the table. Its katsura wood body is carved with radiating tataki-nomi chisel marks, then finished in layers of red-brown lacquer that reveal depth, texture, and subtle variations of light across the surface.

Compared with the square version, this round plate has a softer, more open presence. Its low, substantial form makes it especially suited for shared appetizers, seasonal sweets, cheese, cured ham, or small dishes for guests. The gently undulating rim gives the piece a hand-shaped character, while the glossy black lacquer underside bears Sansuido’s maker’s mark.

About Sansuido

Founded in 1980 near Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Kamakurabori Sansuido continues a carving and lacquer tradition rooted in the old temple town of Kamakura. Each piece is made to be used, admired, and lived with over time.

Care
Kamakura-bori is carved wood finished with natural lacquer. It is durable enough for everyday serving, but a little gentle care will help preserve its color, gloss, and carved texture for years. After use, wash by hand with water or lukewarm water. For oily foods, use a small amount of mild neutral dish soap and a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid scrub brushes, hard sponges, abrasive cleansers, acidic or alkaline cleaners, and polishing powders, as they can dull or scratch the lacquer. Do not soak for long periods. If food has dried onto the surface, soak briefly in lukewarm water for about 5-10 minutes, then wash gently. Dry promptly with a soft cloth after washing, and let it finish drying in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Do not use in the dishwasher, dish dryer, microwave, oven, or over direct heat. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and overly dry conditions, which may cause fading, discoloration, warping, or cracking. Store away from direct sunlight in a ventilated place. If stacking with other pieces, place soft paper or cloth between items to help protect the lacquered surface. If the surface begins to look cloudy, gently wipe with soft gauze or a dry cloth to restore the sheen.
